Community Volunteer Opportunities

Village Agents Needed in Your Community!

There are 46 Village Agents in rural communities all over Hampshire.  If you are interested in learning new skills or refreshing old ones, taking part in your local community, and helping older people to remain independent then Age Concern Hampshire needs you to be the next Village Agent.

Village Agents are local people who offer a few hours a week of their time to signpost and help older people to access information, advice, and local services. They provide a face-to-face contact point for people who are less likely to use the telephone or Internet service to access information. They are also trained to provide a basic home fire safety survey on behalf of the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The Village Agent programme has been running since 2011 following research done by Hampshire County Council's Older Peoples Well-being Team and has been highly successful in helping to reduce social isolation and loneliness in older people by enabling them to access resources that they need, and assisting them to engage with their local communities.

Age Concern Hampshire is pleased to be working in partnership with Hampshire County Council and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.  The project is fully funded and supported by Hampshire County Council.

If you would like to get involved and have some time to offer or know anybody else who might be interested, please get in touch today! Call the Village Agent co-ordinator on 01962 892443 or Freephone 0800 328 7154 or email villageagent@ageconcernhampshire.org.uk.  Alternatively you can download an application form, and find out about our many other volunteering opportunities, on our website:  www.ageconcernhampshire.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer-for-us/

Community Buddy scheme to be piloted in the Forest

A pilot Community Buddy scheme is being run throughout the Forest by Community First New Forest.

The scheme will be providing a volunteer buddy service for young people with additional needs or disability. A Community Buddy is a trained volunteer who will accompany a young person to partake in an activity they like. The volunteer buddy's role is to act as a friend or mentor to enable the young person to enjoy the community more independently. No personal care is involved. There is a small charge to the families using this scheme.

Jacqui Missen, Buddy Co-ordinator at Community First New Forest, is keen to recruit volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. She explains, "Wherever possible Community First New Forest will match volunteers with a young person with similar interests however there are opportunities for new interests and hobbies to be pursued from both sides." Community First New Forest will provide in-house training and a CRB check will need to be undertaken before commencing the role. Expenses will be provided for travel and activities.

If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a 'Community Buddy' please contact Jacqui Missen, Buddy Co-ordinator at Community First New Forest, on 07508 401843 or email buddies@cfnf.org.uk
